Gregory the Great, Benedictine Monk

Gregory the Great, Benedictine monk became bishop of Rome in 590. At end of the sixth century he wrote Pastoral Care, an influential book. Gregory, after whom our own Cura Animarum/Care of the Soul and Companions is named, codified soul care into a work applicable to his own day. Gregory's Pastoral Care furnished for secular priests a pattern of conduct just as the Rule of Benedict did for the western monks.

The ministry of cure of souls, or, pastoral care, consists of helping acts, done by Christians, directed toward the healing, sustaining, guiding, and reconciling of troubled persons who troubles arise in the context of ultimate meanings and concerns.

The Board of Directors endorsed our study of Pope Gregory the Great's Pastoral Care, and then created a declaration of intent reviewing Care of the Soul and Companion's Mission: To ignite each one's dignity and worth by awakening it in self and others.
